TaylorMade has released the MG2 Wedge with a ZTP Raw Groove design. These grooves are deeper, sharper, and narrower to provide improved greenside spin and control.
Milled Grind Sole
The milled grind sole returns with the TaylorMade MG2 Wedge. This milled sole helps improve shot consistency and allows the wedge to interact with the turf optimally. The milling process is very accurate and consistent, with TaylorMade maintaining high tolerance levels.
Thick-thin Head Design
TaylorMade has redesigned the head design, too, optimizing the center of gravity for a better feel and a more accurate flight.
Tpu Insert
A TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) insert also helps dampen vibrations and provides a solid feel on impact.
Now that we know what the upgraded TaylorMade MG2 Wedge features, let’s look at how it performs.
TaylorMade MG2 Wedge Review– Performance
Look and Feel
In the appearance department, the TaylorMade MG2 Wedge is a fairly good-looking wedge, especially the black finish version. The other satin white finish version is also a very classy and sleek-looking golf wedge, but in our opinion, the black finish version is one of the best-looking golf wedges on the market.
The heel looks a bit taller than average, and the head is more of a square than a standard oval-ish-shaped wedge. The head itself is a little smaller in size than average. The wedges overall look clean, simplistic, and modern.
The first thing you’ll notice when you buy the TaylorMade MG2 Wedge is the sticker on the clubface. This sticker protects the clubface’s new Raw Face design from oxidizing and rusting before you are ready to open and play with the clubs.
The Raw Face design that rusts over time might not appeal to many golfers, but it isn’t a big deal either. The rust only forms on and across the grooved area of the clubface, and the rest of the face remains rust-free. Also, the rust that forms over time helps frame the ball better as your’ playing pattern’ develops on the clubface.
The feel of TaylorMade MG2 Wedge is very good. The impact is soft but very responsive. The sound it makes on impact is also a bold ‘click’ and very pleasing. The TPU insert in these wedges does a very good job dampening vibrations, especially on mishits. The feedback on the contact is responsive and strong.
Performance
As we mentioned earlier, the headlining feature of the TaylorMade MG2 Wedge is its ‘Raw Face’ design. As TaylorMade claims, this design improves the spin, feel, and control. And TaylorMade is right. The MG2 provides a great amount of spin – but the spin is controllable and consistent, which is incredibly important.
The returning milled sole is again a very important part of the TaylorMade MG2 Wedge. The milling also allows this wedge to generate and control spin, especially on pitch shots. Out of the bunkers, the milled sole allows the wedge to glide through the sand easily, making trickier shots easy to play.
The TaylorMade MG2 Wedge is also a very versatile golf wedge. It allows for an incredible range of golf shots from anywhere on the golf course. The soft feel paired with the milled, raw face makes for a wedge that will allow you to control all shots, whether they are high lobs or low chips.
Our Final Thoughts
That’s it for our TaylorMade MG2 Wedge Review! We hope our review helps you choose the perfect golf wedge for you – one that suits your strengths, weaknesses, and style of play. Remember to consider all your golfing needs before purchasing the TaylorMade MG2 Wedge for yourself!
The TaylorMade MG2 Wedge is a wedge geared towards low to mid handicapper players, which is why if you are a high handicap player, you’d be better off with a wedge like the Callaway MD5 Jaws.
For low-mid handicappers, the TaylorMade MG2 Wedge could just be perfect. They will help you improve control, spin, and accuracy around the greens. Generating and controlling spin with these wedges is easy, and the Raw Face technology also helps. The raw face also means these clubs are very durable and will last you for many years to come.
