Golf attire has come a long way and to learn how we got to the casual attire from the much formal necktie wearing days of the 1920s, let’s look at a bit of history.
A History of Golf Attire
In the early days of golf, golfers wore clothing for the purpose of overcoming the harsh winds and weather in Scotland, where golf originated. Golfers wore knickerbockers (knickers) or short pants that ended below the knee, and heavy tweed jackets. Shirts with starched collars and neckties, along with study shoes and tweed caps.
By the 1920s, golf became popular among the more affluent members of society and they distinguished themselves by wearing formal outfits that featured “plus fours” or knickers with 4 inches of additional length, patterned, long golf socks and two-tone “spectator” shoes.
By the 1930s, golfers went from knickers to flannel trousers, usually white, since they would go to the golf course straight from their offices. During the US open in 1933, a heat wave forced players to switch to more casual and lightweight clothing. Neckties were also ditched during this time.
By the 1940s, golf clothing resembled more of how we see it today. In hot weather, golfers wore short-sleeved knitted shirts and lightweight slacks. In the winter, water resistant “Eisenhower” jackets became the norm, as these had generous shoulders to allow for easy swings and a tight waistband.
Since then, khakis with colorful shirts and shorts for warm weather became popular choices. Comfort became the primary measure for golf wear while maintaining formal elements like collared shirts and proper golf shoes.
Today’s golf attire has gone full circle to the old days of Scottish golfers. Golfers wear clothes that are built for utility, comfort and practicality with a bit of added style.
